The characterful old buildings were once the fashionable 19th century home of Sir John Wylde, first Chief Justice of the Cape. In those days the estate - near the Dutch East India Company’s gardens - extended over several hectares.

By virtue of his office, Wylde was one of the most prominent figures in the colony. For more than a quarter of a century he not only ruled the Cape’s Supreme Court and Legislative Council, but also presided over its flamboyant social life. His elegant table, fine wines and scintillating company were renowned.

Aubergine has been innovatively renovated with dash of personality and splash of character, in contemporary style in keeping with the elegance and charm of the old building.

In our never-ending pursuit of excellence, we place great emphasis on the quality and service of our food & wines. Many have judged the result and bestowed every kind of accolade upon the Aubergine.

Despite the recognition, Harald Bresselschmidt, Chef and owner, never rests on his laurels. New and ever more exciting dishes are continually being created.

Our Wine

The Aubergine Experience is designed to ensure that you enjoy the best of South Africa’s cooking with the best of its wines. Consequently our wine list is structured to complement the uniqueness of Harald Bresselschmidt’s culinary creations.

Not only does this mean that all of South Africa’s wine growing regions and grape varieties are represented but we make it the hallmark of our cellar that a wine only earns inclusion if it reflects genuine authenticity, a distinctive personality and a true sense of place or ‘terroir’. A wide range of German Riesling and foreign wines available.

Function Venue

The restaurant lends itself as a perfect venue for special occasions, business meetings, weddings and exclusive functions. We can accommodate 50 guests in our main dining room and up to 80 in total.We have two smaller dining rooms for between 12 and 16 guests.

Menus and appropriate wine selections are tailored to your individual taste.No party is too small, and you can expect attentive,professional service, a great atmosphere and the finest cuisine, as we transform your occasion into a memorable event.
