El Burro

1st Floor Exhibition Building, 81 Main Road, Greenpoint, Cape Town

Located in Greenpoint above Rhapsodys, opposite the Stadium, four young people have come together to run this restaurant.

The decor is chic, stylish, funky Mexican. Wooden tables, seating with cushions and light wooden floors highlight a huge deep fuchsia pink wall which is strewn with odd shaped mirrors, lanterns and religious icons. Candles twinkle everywhere. Cactus plants abound.

Traditional dishes include, fried corn and mushroom quesadillas served with wild rocket, radish and red onion or tacos with a filling of your choice. Of course, in true Mexican style, El Burro has a range of imported tequilas to choose from.

El Burro is a modern Mexican, upstairs with an attractive balcony overlooking the Cape Town stadium.

The welcome is warm and attentive and inside the look is fresh in lime colouration and light wood, with potted plants, stripped brick walls contrasting those that are painted deep red, modern light fittings, plantation fans.

Booth seating, fairy lights, a festival feeling - and then there are the Mexican skeletons plus a fair number of cacti, but it's all not too hokey-themed and the music is fun.
